The Greatest Gay Beaches in California

Los Angeles–based website LAist.com has ranked the five gayest beaches in California -- seemingly based on their distance from West Hollywood hot spot the Abbey and how many men are likely to be wearing spandex, Speedos, or simply nothing at all -- with Santa Monica’s Will Rogers State Beach taking the top spot.

Just 12 miles away from the Abbey and boasting “swimming trunks often a size too small,” Will Rogers admittedly takes top honors because it’s the closest beach to West Hollywood, even though the website notes its questionable water quality.

Rounding out the list are the El Matador nude beach in Malibu, West Street Beach in Laguna Beach, San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente, and Black’s Beach in San Diego (which is also nude).

Nearly half the California voters were against Proposition 8 (which passed largely due to an influx of cash from Utah's Mormon contributors). Plus, a day at the beach can be enjoyed for free, unless you want to pay for parking (not required). Then again, if you don't know the proper use of "its" (no apostrophe needed for possessive use), it's unlikely you'll fully understand the facts surrounding Proposition 8. By all means, continue to vacation where you prefer; there will be no shortage of both informed and uninformed beach-loving locals/tourists on California's beautiful shoreline, with or without Proposition H8. BTW, Black's Beach is as good as advertised, and the climb back up the cliff is a real workout!
